Get Clarity. Get a Plan. Move Forward with Confidence.
Is your child struggling with attention, organization, or emotional regulation? Are they having difficulties academically, socially, or emotionally? Trying to understand what’s going on and how best to help can feel overwhelming.
At Neuropsychology Associates of Kalamazoo, we specialize in helping families identify the underlying factors affecting their child’s functioning and development, offering clear answers and effective solutions through comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations.
A neuropsychological evaluation goes beyond surface-level concerns to uncover how your child thinks, learns, and processes the world, helping ensure interventions are targeted and effective.
Rather than guessing or trying multiple interventions without clear direction, this comprehensive assessment helps you understand:
Why your child is struggling
What their unique strengths are
How to support them effectively at home, in school, and emotionally
Families often leave the process feeling relieved, validated, and empowered with a clear roadmap forward.
What is Neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology is a specialty within psychology that focuses on the relationship between the brain and behavior, learning, emotions, and social development.
Neuropsychologists are licensed psychologists with doctoral-level training (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and advanced, specialized postdoctoral experience in brain-behavior relationships.
What We Evaluate:
Our comprehensive assessments are tailored to your child and may include evaluation of:
ADHD and executive functioning (attention, organization, planning)
Learning disabilities (reading, writing, math)
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Anxiety, mood, and emotional regulation
Memory and processing speed
Social functioning and peer relationships
We work with children, adolescents, and young adults across the greater Kalamazoo area, including Portage, Mattawan, Battle Creek, and surrounding Southwest Michigan communities.
Differences Between School Evaluations and Neuropsychological Evaluations:
Public schools offer assessments to determine eligibility for services and accommodations. While valuable, school evaluations are typically limited in scope and do not provide formal diagnoses, which can constrain recommendations outside the school setting. Neuropsychological evaluations, conducted by neuropsychologists, provide a broader analysis and can yield diagnostic clarification and recommendations for both school and home environments.
What Happens During a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation offers a detailed understanding of your child’s unique strengths and areas of difficulty, helping you see how they perform compared to others their age and guiding targeted interventions.
An evaluation typically includes:
A detailed consultation with the child and parents or caregivers
Review of educational, medical, and other relevant records
Direct, one-on-one testing with your child using a variety of tasks (such as interviews, paper-and-pencil exercises, computerized activities, puzzles, and hands-on tasks). These assessments examine multiple areas, including attention, executive functioning, language, memory, academic skills, visual-spatial abilities, and social/emotional functioning
Following the evaluation, we will provide a comprehensive feedback session to help you understand the results with personalized recommendations for interventions and supports
Results from the evaluation will be included in a comprehensive written medical report, which can be helpful for medical decision-making by health care providers, therapists, and educators
When Should You Consider an Evaluation?
You might consider a neuropsychological evaluation if your child is experiencing ongoing challenges with:
Ongoing struggles with focus, organization, or school performance
Emotional outbursts, anxiety, or low frustration tolerance
Declining confidence or self-esteem
Difficulty maintaining friendships
Limited progress despite tutoring or therapy
The process of seeking evaluation or intervention is individualized. You can start with your child’s pediatrician or school staff, or contact our office directly for guidance. We offer initial consultations to help determine whether an evaluation is appropriate. Families often tell us this process is a turning point, bringing relief, validation, and a plan forward.
